Meet Deanie Dunne:

What was the best reaction you’ve gotten from a reader?

Thanks for being with us. Can you tell us about “Book title”, writing style and yourself?I have several children’s books published, but for this part of the interview, we’ll talk about my new one, My Life at Sweetbrier-A Life Changed by Horses. This is my personal story of beating the odds and realizing my dream. The writing style in this story is conversational because I ask questions from time to time, to engage the readers. Because the book is based on a true story, we used photos, rather than illustrations to have a bigger impact on young readers. All of my books encourage good character in children. This book emphasizes things like perseverance, setting goals, friendship, and helping others.

How much fun was it to work with your illustrator?

My sister, Holly Humphrys-Bajaj, illustrates my books. We have great fun together. For example, when we were working on our fictional books they feature animal characters who tell the stories. Our family, dog, Elliott, was one of the stars. We gave the character Elliott’s personality. He loved jumping in the air to catch biscuits. Our Elliott was friendly and fun, like the one in the story. When we talked about Hattie the chicken, we gave her cute bonnets to wear because she loved wearing hats. Hattie wrote with her beak so we called it her “beakmanship.”

Holly is extremely gifted. Her illustrations bring the characters to life. Readers love them.

What was the best reaction you’ve gotten from a reader?

Someone sent me an email saying she really loved my book. One of the best parts for her was getting to learn about Yoruba mythology and how similar it is to Indian mythology.

How much fun was it working with your illustrator?

As a Mom, I have to justify every penny I spend and having illustrations done come secondary to providing for my child. It’s not the easiest thing trying to find an illustrator that can work with your budget but also deliver the quality that you require to give your readers the best experience. As my books are based on Yoruba myths, it’s quite tasking trying to explain how the characters should look. However, when my illustrator delivered the final illustrations, it made the entire experience worthwhile for me.

What was the best reaction you’ve gotten from a reader?

“I bought this book as amusement for myself… And I love coming back to it-!! It is so creative that it naturally inspires you to think up your own Special Sounds too. Love, love, love this book! Blessings and appreciation to the author!” Amazon.com

I love this review because even though I wrote this book for children, this review shows me I have reached even further and touched the child in all of us. The wonder of new discoveries and the sheer joy of those discoveries is what I hoped to convey in this story and at least for this reader, I did!

How much fun was it working with your illustrator?

It was so much fun to work with my illustrator because it was me! What was amazing about this is I had never drawn before. When I finished writing the story I felt that no one else could draw what was in my head so I decided to give it a try.

The first time I drew a cow, I looked at it carefully and said, “Wow, that so much looks like a horse!” Needless to say, I pulled out my computer, looked at images of cows and figured out what makes them look like cows, not horses! My final drawing is of a cow!

I learned so much from being the illustrator as well as the author. I would encourage anyone to give it a try!

Meet Marjory Hembroff

What has been the best reaction from a reader so far?  It was getting my first fan mail.

I got an email from someone who got a copy of my book Bess’s Magical Garden. She was thrilled to learn that I lived in the area where her parents had once lived. She was looking forward to reading my book. I got another email from a fan who had received my picture book Gramma Mouse Tells a Story. She had read the book for herself and was looking forward to cuddling up with her grandson and reading to him.

How much fun is it to work with your illustrator?

How much fun is it to work with your illustrator? Well, I am not sure that question applies to me because I was the one who did all the illustrations for my books. It was fun doing my illustrations. I had the liberty of going through my books and picking the section that I wanted to use for an illustration. For my middle-grade novel, I had an idea for the cover as I worked on the book.

Meet Deb Hockenberry

What has been the best reaction from a reader so far?

I haven’t heard from just one reader, but a person who has bought ‘Where Can We Have The Party?’ for their grandchild. The customer says her granddaughter has read it over and over. The little girl keeps it with her, hugs it, and keeps looking at it. That thrills me just knowing that something I wrote makes a child so happy! I’ve heard stories exactly like this one from other customers. I love it!

How much fun is it to work with your illustrator?

Working with my illustrator, Emily Dimov-Gottshall, was so much fun! We put equal effort into the pictures. She came over to my apartment to see what style I wanted the illustrations drawn in. She wrote all the information down. She also asked if I had any ideas for the illustrations. I did give her a manuscript with ideas for them typed in bold letters. She loved that. Then she asked if I had an idea for the cover. I had the picture in my head but telling her my idea was impossible for me. So, I did bought a sketch-pad and drew my cover, scanned it, and send it over to her. I can’t draw at all, but she got the idea of what I wanted. In my drawings, I included, in writing, the colors of the clothes, bows, hats. Emily is a good friend and that really made it fun!

Meet Rachel Stafford

What was the best reaction you’ve had from a reader so far?

A little backstory first: When I was young, my mom made up a bedtime story about a greasy opossum, with us girls as the main characters. In time, it was passed on to my boys. Then I had the idea to turn this into a children’s book and dedicate it to my mom. I began right away, writing and drawing non-stop for nearly two months until it was perfect. I was a day late, but I was finally able to present the finished project to my parents. Mom’s reaction was priceless! But the reaction that totally blew me away was my dad’s. I don’t remember him crying at my wedding, but when I handed him that book and he read it for the first time. I will never forget it. I wrote this book for my parents-especially Mom-and for my children, and their children. Their reactions are what made all of the hard work (even tears, sometimes) worth it.

How much fun is it working with your illustrator?

I illustrate my own books at this time. I have loved art with a burning passion since I was a young child and I went to college to pursue it. Of course, life happened, and it wasn’t until recently that I started serious painting projects again. The freedom to create again is what keeps drawing me back into the world of children’s books!

Meet Virginia Wright

What has been the best reaction from a reader so far?

The best reaction from a reader is Timothy the Christmas Mouse is a wonderful children’s book for the holidays. The story is exciting and one that teaches how good things come to those who share with generosity. This book, as in all of Virginia Wright’s stories, has great messages for children as well as adults. But even better than the wonderful story, are the amazing original illustrations by Virginia. I love how each one gives you a different feeling and perspective.

I recommend this book along with its companion, “Timothy the Christmas Mouse Coloring Book for Children” for your kids, grand-kids, nieces, nephews, or even just for yourself. The illustration in this book could be framed and used for Christmas art to hang on your wall. They are that good.

How much fun is it to work with your illustrator?

This question made me smile. I don’t have an illustrator; as I illustrate all my books. But let me tell you how much fun it is as an illustrator; it is extraordinarily fun, exhilarating! You first begin with the basic idea for a page, then start working every corner you bend to come up with a story that is not only readable, but the illustrations help tell the story, too.  And when the story is complete, and you get reviews that recommend your books, it is doubly exhilarating.
